Alexander McQueen - Rest in Peace

As many of you may have already heard, Alexander McQueen died today, suspected of committing suicide. It is a very sad loss to many of those both in and out of the fashion world. To commemorate him, I decided to make him my first deisgner to focus on. I have always though of Alexander McQueen's designs as being a bit too out there for me, but I did appreciate the black skull scarf which quickly trickled down to the high street. That's the most I know about Alexander McQueen.

A quick trip to vogue.co.uk and I'm inundated with images of McQueen's collections over the past decade. Firstly, his S/S 2010 RTW Collection, I'm drawn to the hair, and I'm sorry Mr McQueen, but I really don't like it. And I love a good pair of shoes, but I'm more confused as to how the models feet fit into the heels, rather than being concerned with them being cool or fashionable.

I do however, love the second dress which graced the catwalk. It's mix of snakeskin print, with a very light silky-chiffon fabric and feathers above the bust all contrast to make it a fierce, yet feminine piece. The shape of it makes me happy because it would possibly suit me, it's fitted at the bust and not so fitted at my biggest part... (I'm a pear). I adore the way that to make it soft and also strapless, a very very sheer shoulder is included which cannot be seen until magnified. I even had to look twice to check it was there. I'm very impressed so far with myself (and obviously Alexander McQueen), that I've appreciated something so quickly from another designer.

To me, Alexander McQueen was always a bit too out there, but so far, this is proving me very wrong!

A few years back to A/W 07 RTW, and I'm back the beginning, I can't quite appreciate this strange mannequin fronted dress, it's a bit too scary and dark for me.

I love the under-skirt, the colour and the material, but the top half is a little Lady GaGa-esque.

However, in exactly the same collection, this incredible olive-green grecian beauty catches my eye. It's a fantastic colour than the usual creams, pinks, pastels you get from a Grecian dress, and i love the edgy collar at the top making it that little bit less girly and feminine.

Looking at Alexander McQueen's collections I'm definitely appreciating his work, he has created some beautiful pieces (from the girl who loves a good pink dress) but as I'm only starting out, it may be a while before I can appreciate that black mannequin fronted piece...

He's certainly been a good starting block!

Stuck On Glitter

This journey begins with a love for Chanel, Miu Miu, Chloe and Dior by John Galliano. All fairly classic, beautiful designs from well-established designers. Taking my eye off those and branching out to Alexander McQueen, Pucci and House of Holland scares me a little bit, they may also be extremely well-established designers, but I could never see myself wanting to buy their designs. I am a fair realist when it comes to fashion, only appreciating what will look good on most people and what will look good on me (I wasn't blessed with a coat-hanger body) so therefore I tend to look at fashion that will suit me, if it is not from the designers that I adore. For the next posts, I'm going to look at designers, trends, styles, from fashion and beauty and try my hand at appreciating them and finding new designers or brands which inspire me to move away from all those glittery, pink, girly, classic, trends that hang in my wardrobe, sit on my shoe racks and live in my bathroom drawers...
